On this day…… Part Three

Herbert Attwood, John Simms, William Gould

9th April 1908

Three men on this day were awarded medals for bravery by the The Order of St John of Jerusalem:

“For splendid rescue work after an explosion, at Norton Hill Colliery, Somerset.  Attwood descended a few minutes after the catastrophe; and as the cage could not reach the landing, 100yards above the shaft bottom, slid down the greasy iron guides.  He went some distance alone towards the the scene of the explosion, and was afterwards joined by Gould and Simms.  The noble trio found two of their comrades dead, and soon themselves succumbed to the deadly fumes of choke damp, being found later on by another relief party.  A large number of doctors, ex-soldiers and others received certificates for heroic services on that day.”
